A Century of Service: Honoring 100 Years of the Murphy Legacy

In 1925, after returning home from war, Matthew J. Murphy founded the Murphy Insurance Agency from his home at 142 West Avenue in Lockport. Built on the values of integrity and community involvement, the agency quickly became a trusted name in local insurance.

When Matthew passed unexpectedly in 1951, his wife, Mary F. Murphy, defied expectations by stepping in to lead the agency—a remarkable feat at a time when female leadership in business was rare. Her perseverance and strength laid the foundation for future generations.

Their son, Don Murphy, joined the agency full-time in 1954 after his service in the Korean War and earning his insurance license through night classes. Under Don’s leadership, the agency moved locations to accommodate growth, eventually settling at 111 Pine Street in 1979, one of Lockport’s oldest homes.

In 1984, the third generation joined when Mary F. Murphy, Don’s daughter, entered the business. By 1998, she became the sole owner, continuing the Murphy family’s commitment to service, resilience, and community ties.

In 2020, Murphy Insurance proudly merged with the Emerling and Floss Agencies to become Emerling Floss Murphy & Associates (EFM&A)—a partnership built on shared values and a dedication to clients.

Today, as we mark 100 years, we honor the legacy of three generations and thank our clients, partners, and community for their trust and support. Here’s to the next century of service and strength.
